History:
Museum of natural history was founded in 1954 on the second floor of secretarial building, Chulalongkorn University by Royal science institute of Thailand, with Field Marshal P. Piboon Songkram as president of the opening ceremony and an assistance of Dr. Boonsong Lekagul, who had offered models of birds displayed in Diorama style. Later the display was withdrawn from the museum. For over 6 decades, the biology department has welcomed students and professors from both in the country and abroad who helped the department to collect various prototypes of organism. Realizing the importance of educational dissemination, the department then decided to raise the exhibition once again to distribute knowledge about organism, nature, history and dynamics of environmental system especially the ecosystem. The exhibition was hailed at biology building 1 (white building), room 230, faculty of science, Chulalongkorn University. This grand opening was also to celebrate the King’s 60th Birthday and 70th anniversary of Chulalongkorn University. The faculty of science, along with Chulalongkorn University Science Alumni had also raised a campaign to fund annual budget of the university, with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Sirindhorn as president of the ceremony on 25 November 1987. The museum of natural history has officially been opened ever since.
Exhibited Contents:
The museum exhibits assortments of organisms from diverse point of views, namely in academic viewpoints, nature conservancy, relationship and utilization of biological science. Some examples are
Anatomical structures of various organisms which reveal internal structures of the bodies that are differ in shapes, sizes and functions
Thai seashells, prehistoric fossils
Biological life of bees
Fish in Thai classic literatures
Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle (only exist in Thailand)
Thai Coppersmith Barbet bird, Princess Sirinthorn bird, Panda crab etc.
